Meet Banana, Caramel & Pecan.

Now, this gelato might not be one that Sam & Enrico’s Nonnas would agree is 100% Italian. But with a little twist, it instantly entered our hall of fame.

We’d been wanting to make a banana gelato for years. Not foamy bananas (though we have always been partial to a classic pick ‘n mix from the cornershop). But one made with real banana. Full and fruity, sweet and creamy. While it may not be an evergreen flavour in the gelaterias of Italy, it’s not unheard of - particularly when the bananas are in season. And near impossible to find in the UK.

Enter, us. Stage left.

Bananas are the unsung heroes to those who work in the world of confectionery. Kings of the fruit bowl, even when they’re on the turn. Underneath that browning skin, their natural sugars caramelise, giving them a rich sweetness while maintaining their rich flavour. And that makes them the perfect addition to many a dessert. Frittered. Pied. Split. Delicious whatever way you peel it.

So naturally, in our years of experimentation to make something beyond just a simple banana gelato, we found complementing the natural caramel flavour to be key. Ribbons of salted caramel, not overtly sweet, compliment without overpowering. The addition of texture elevates the experience further, with the introduction of caramelised pecans.

The result? A soft, fruity gelato base, a light touch of caramel swirl, and a satisfying crunch. Perfect harmony.


 
 

Did You Know?

Banana, Caramel & Pecan first hit shelves as an exclusive flavour for Gorillas in 2022. While only available for a limited time, it began to gain cult status amongst those in the know. After 3 years of begging, we finally revisited the flavour in the tasting room. And promptly couldn’t believe we’d ever taken it off the menu. We won’t be making that mistake again.

As the judges at the Great Taste Awards 2024 said, “It could be basic, but the ratio and quality of the ingredients is superlative”. That’s probably why they gave it Two Stars.
